Dr. Abdulkarim Ekzayez

Syria

Dr Abdulkarim Ekzayez is a medical doctor and global health expert with over 15 years of experience working at the intersection of clinical medicine, humanitarian response, public health, and health systems governance. Originally trained as a neurosurgeon in Syria, he shifted his focus during the conflict to help build frontline health services and governance systems in war-affected regions. Today, he is recognized as one of the leading international voices on health in Syria and fragile settings more broadly.

He currently serves as the Whole of Syria Director for Action for Humanity, where he leads a multi-regional strategy to support early recovery, economic revitalization, and health access for crisis-affected communities. He also holds an academic appointment as a Research Fellow at King’s College London, co-leading the NIHR-funded Research for Health System Strengthening in Syria (R4HSSS), a pioneering initiative to rebuild health governance in conflict areas.

Dr Ekzayez has consulted for global institutions such as WHO, Chatham House, and Chemonics, and played key roles in pandemic response, humanitarian coordination, and digital health systems. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and spoken at major global forums, including the Geneva Health Forum and the World Health Summit.

Through his leadership roles—including as former General Secretary of the Syrian British Medical Society—Dr Ekzayez champions localisation, inclusive governance, and the role of social enterprise in rebuilding societies after conflict. His work bridges field realities, academic rigor, and international diplomacy to shape a more equitable and resilient global health system.
